More About this Event

The WMCA proudly presents “a community telling of Pawâkan Macbeth” by Akpik Theatre, a professional northern Indigenous theatre company, on Sunday June 22nd and Monday June 23rd.

Pawâkan works with three Indigenous languages: Plains Cree, Stoney Nakoda and Michif. This 2025 tour gives Akpik Theatre the opportunity to delve deeper into Métis culture and land and hopefully more language with the cast and company. This Community Telling tour brings them into Treaty 1 territory for the first time and has them developing an even deeper connection to the land and communities in The Prairies. Pawâkan remains inspired by the youth of Frog Lake First Nation on Treaty 6 Territory.

This performance offers a unique opportunity for the Westman community to experience professional Indigenous theatre. The WMCA's primary goal is to provide the community with access to important Indigenous storytelling within contemporary theatre. We also believe this production contributes to the broader movement of integrating Indigenous narratives into the theatrical landscape.

Pawâkan is recommended for audiences aged 14 and older. The story, drawing parallels between Macbeth and the Cree legend of the Wihtiko, naturally explores darker themes.
